I like erotica that is slow burn, that slowly builds up to a climax. I also want to be told a story, I want to be turning the pages (or scrolling) with anticipation - wondering what is going to happen next. And when it does, I want to think - Oh, I didn’t expect that.
Below are five writers on my reading list. Three of them are slow burn and two go straight for the jugular.
To the writers - please don’t be offended by my comments. I love your work.
To those not on the list - I have been trying to put this together for ages. There are more lists to come.
Slow Burn
May More I read as much of everything she writes as I can - she is a prolific writer. There is something real about her stories and when you read her semi-autobiographical pieces you can see why. Whether she is writing humorous romps like Nightingales or the intimate details of her life her writing is always engaging.
Find her on Substack at May More and on Medium. May is also an editor of Tantalizing Tales on Substack
Dianne Herbert also writes stories that are semi-autobiographical. She never uses one word when three or even fifty-three will do. Diane tells you about every brick, every twig her character sees but, since her character is often running naked down the street, she has placed herself in a situation where she would have a heightened sense of awareness. Some of her stories are the most erotic, most sensual and downright sexy I have read - and there is (sometimes) no sex!
H. Zilfiger. I am addicted to his fantasy erotic serial Awakening the Innocent. Talking about slow burn, this story has reached chapter 7 and the main character has only just taken her clothes off but it is dripping with sexual anticipation and suspense.
Straight to the jugular
Zatanna Dark Some of her stories, OK, most of her stories, are completely bonkers. Her darker work will make you cringe and stimulate you at the same time. She has twists in her stories that leave The Joker in awe. She writes a lot of hundos, which I am not always a fan off, but her longer stories are absolute gems.
Ginger Bangs Skims along the top of porn but when she fires up her metaphor engine she will have you giggling, squirming and wetting you knickers for all the wrong, and the right reasons. Again she writes a lot of short, sharp fiction, so if one does not make you snigger, move onto the next.
And finally
I know this makes six but I think this article by Spanking Theatre, Why Erotica Matters is one of the best on why we need erotica to inspire, and teach, and challenge us I have read.
If you cannot be bothered to search for these authors I have a list of some of my favourite stories by them and others on Medium
TY so much Simone - wonderful to have u read me so much!
To be mentioned by Simone Francis in this context is like a street busker being name-checked by Mozart. I remain in awe of Simone's ability and output.
